JMG Tennis Player from Arden Hills Wins Wildcard to Men’s US Open
Never accomplished before by an unseeded player until now, Collin Altamirano, a tennis player at JMG Tennis Academy at Arden Hills, has earned a Wildcard to the Men’s US Open with a win at the USTA National Championship. Led by Academy Director Joseph Morris Gilbert, two top JMG Academy players from Arden Hills, Collin Altamirano and Jenson Brooksby, competed in national tournaments both taking home first place victories this weekend.
In Kalamazoo, Michigan, Collin Altamirano was the one to watch in the Boys 18s Division at the 71st USTA National Championships. Altamirano was outstanding in his performance and upset Boys 18s number one seed Gage Brymer from Irvine,Calif., to face number 14 seed Jared Donaldson of Rhode Island in the finals. Receiving a standing ovation after his third set win against Donaldson, Altamirano made history Sunday afternoon as the first unseeded player to win the USTA National Championship – a tournament that has been played for the past 71 years.
The USTA National Championship Tournament is the premier Junior Boys tournament in the United States and the winner, Collin Altamirano, receives a wildcard into the Men’s U.S. Open. “I don’t play as much as the other kids when it comes to juniors,” said Collin Altamirano. “I did not expect to be seeded. It’s good — I’m doing what I came here to do.”
Jenson Brooksby, seeded number one entering the tournament, competed in the USTA National Championships in Little Rock, Arkansas, in the Boys 12s Division. Brooksby played exceptionally well facing several elite competitors before winning his final match against fourth seed Thomas Yu. Brooksby won the finals with a score of 6-3; 6-1 in his sets.
