Selecting a Personal Trainer

By Arden Hills

There are more than 15,000 professional personal trainers in the United States.  However; only 5% of them have selected personal training to be their full time career. If you are interested in working with a personal trainer you should look for the following requirements:

  • Certification: Your personal trainer must be certified with a professional organization for them to legally train you. There are many certifying organizations out there but the elite organizations are the NSCA, ACE, ACSM, NASM, NFPT and USAW.
  • Education:  Some of the most successful personal trainers have a fitness related background including kinesiology, exercises science or exercise physiology. Earning a bachelors or masters degree in a fitness related field provides your personal trainer with a vast amount of knowledge to train you with.
  • Experience: Having initials after their name does not necessarily mean they are a good personal trainer. Ask to see some testimonials from clients they have worked with in the past to make sure they are a reputable professional.

Following these three guidelines should lead you to a well educated, experienced and certified fitness professional that can assist you in achieving your fitness goals.
