Which Tanning Method is Safest?
- Natural Sun
- Tanning Beds
- Sunless Tanning
As we edge closer to summer, we all want the quickest and safest way to achieve that natural bronzed skin. However, it’s easily possible to become overwhelmed with which option is the safest for a tan—sunless tanning lotions, spray tan, tanning beds or natural sunlight.
In recent years, sunless tanning lotions have become popular due to concerns regarding ultraviolet radiation from the sun. However, they are associated with several risks and dangers with their use. These lotions may contain a compound called Dihdroxyacetone (DHA), which is a sugar that dyes the skin, and may worsen the absorption of free radicals upon exposure to light. Using sunless tanning products may cause skin allergies due to a combination of ingredients. The pros of the sunless products are that you don’t have to expose your body to any harmful UV rays, resulting in a decrease of skin cancer and premature aging. If you do choose to use a lotion, be sure to test a small area to avoid any skin irritations.
Tanning beds give skin a tan, which is the skin’s reaction to exposure from UV rays. Typically in a tanning salon, the tanning-bed radiation levels are more potent and intense, and users must limit their exposure to very brief periods of time. Manufacturers have started to increase the amount of UV-B radiation given off by tanning beds to better duplicate natural solar UV light and speed up the tanning process. This causes concern because UV-B radiation is more likely to cause cancer than UV-A radiation. This tanning resource can cause skin sensitivity, as well as dry out the skin, worsening skin conditions like eczema.
Natural sunlight, like tanning beds, puts off harsh UVA rays (aging rays) and UVB rays (the burning rays), which are all known to increase the risk of several skin cancers. Sun exposure, just like everything we consume, is good for you in moderation. Studies have shown that the sun is our best resource of Vitamin D. Too much sun exposure can lead to sun damage, premature aging, as well as Basal and Squamous cell carcinoma. Limit exposure to 30 minutes a day, which is all you need to achieve a summer glow.
