Workout Wednesday Tip: Use Herbs for Seasoning Instead of Salt

Besides using herbs to help flavor foods when cutting back on salt, fat and sugar, herbs may also offer additional benefits of their own. Researchers are finding that both fresh and dried cooking herbs have antioxidants that may help protect against such diseases as cancer and heart disease. Try using some of these herbs to enhance your diet!

BASIL – great with tomatoes and balsamic vinegar; terrific in fresh pesto; other possibilities include pasta sauce and zucchini

CILANTRO – Mexican, Asian and Caribbean cooking; salsas, tomatoes

MINT – carrots, fruit salads, peas, tabouli, iced tea

OREGANO – peppers, tomatoes

ROSEMARY – chicken, fish, lamb, pork, roasted potatoes, soups, tomatoes

SAGE – poultry seasoning, and a great addition to stuffings

TARRAGON - chicken, eggs, fish

THYME – eggs, lima beans, potatoes, summer squash, tomatoes
